A study recently sponsored by a leading insurance company, which surveyed 1,200 drivers between the ages of 18 and 60, found that 81 percent of drivers "multitasked". One in eight respondents said he or she changed radio stations or CDs and the same proportion acknowledged drinking a beverage.
Three-quarters of those who filled out the survey talked on a cell phone, 68 percent ate a snack, and 23 percent acknowledged they experienced road rage. Four percent admitted they have driven while intoxicated. This conduct causes serious injuries and death. It is important to those who engage in such conduct be held responsible for their choices that harm others.
This study also found that the youngest drivers, ages 18 to 27, were the most likely to frequently multitask while driving—35 percent, while 30 percent of drivers ages 28 to 44 multitasked and 21 percent of the 45- to 60-year-olds multitasked.
While the sample size of this study appears small, it reflects an accurate sampling of drivers on the road. If someone were to multiply the numbers of respondents by 10 or by 100, the correlating statistics would correctly reflect current conditions on the road when it comes to the number of distracted drivers and their behaviors. Most people can attest to this growing problem by having witnessed it firsthand or having been a victim of this reckless behavior.
In 2008, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation, 5,870 people lost their lives and an estimated 515,000 people were injured in reported crashes in which at least one form of driver distraction was reported on the police crash report. These federal government compiled statistics demonstrates the importance of these issues.
